Frequently Asked Questions

What does a lactation consultant do?

A lactation consultant offers expert support with all aspects of infant feeding — whether that’s breastfeeding, expressing, mixed feeding, or bottle feeding. I work closely with you to understand your goals and help you feel more confident, comfortable, and supported on your feeding journey..

Do I need to be breastfeeding to see a lactation consultant?

Not at all. While many people come to me for breastfeeding help, I also support parents who are expressing, combination feeding, or exclusively bottle feeding — including with formula. My role is to support you, whatever your feeding choices or challenges may be. If you are not lactating but wish to have a breastfeeding experience, I can also help with alternative supplemental feeding systems.

When should I book an appointment?

You’re welcome to reach out at any time — before birth, shortly after baby arrives, or weeks or months down the line. Some people book antenatal sessions to prepare for breastfeeding, while others contact me when issues like pain, latch problems or supply concerns come up.

Can you help with painful breastfeeding?

Yes, absolutely. Pain is a common reason for parents reach out. I’ll assess the latch, positioning, and any other contributing factors. Together we’ll work to understand what’s causing the discomfort and create a plan to make feeding feel more comfortable.

What happens during a consultation?

Consultations are calm, friendly, and completely tailored to you. We’ll talk through your feeding experience so far, your goals, and any challenges you’re facing. I’ll observe a feed if appropriate, provide a full assessment, and offer practical, evidence-based support.

Do you offer home visits?

Yes — I offer home visits across Maidenhead and surrounding areas. Being in your own space can help you and your baby feel more relaxed, and I can offer support that fits your real-world routine.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes, I offer online consultations if you're outside my home visit area, or just prefer the convenience. Many feeding issues can still be effectively supported over video.

How long does a session last?

Initial consultations usually last around 60–90 minutes, giving plenty of time for a thorough assessment and to answer all your questions. Follow-up sessions are usually 30–60 minutes depending on your needs.

Will one session be enough?

Sometimes one session is all that’s needed, especially for reassurance or minor tweaks. Other times, follow-ups are helpful for ongoing support. We’ll decide together what feels right for you. There are also different types of follow ups and ways we can continue to work through your needs.

Can you help with low milk supply?

Yes, but this will also depend on the cause which we will look into. We’ll explore what might be affecting supply and discuss ways to increase it as much as possible. This might involve feeding frequency, expressing, or other techniques. I’ll make sure any plan is realistic and suited to your situation.

Do you support formula or combination feeding?

Absolutely. There’s no one right way to feed a baby, and I fully support parents using formula or combining breast and bottle feeding. I can help you make it work smoothly and confidently.

Is your support inclusive of all families?

Yes. I welcome and support all parents — regardless of gender, background, or how your family is formed. Feeding support should feel safe, inclusive, and free from judgment.
